The Basics: I’m Emmett McMenamy, a sophomore at Drake University from St. Louis, Missouri. I am majoring in Multimedia Journalism and Public Relations with a minor in Writing. I aspire to be a sports reporter for a professional sports league.
How I started: I first knew that I wanted to pursue being a sports reporter when I was a freshman in high school. I started playing baseball in elementary school and I have been in love with America’s pastime ever since. Growing up in St. Louis, it is expected that one becomes a passionate Cardinals fan, and that was no different with me. I found myself writing articles about St. Louis Cardinals baseball when I was in middle school and I quickly realized that I was meant to write about sports.
Career Aspirations: As I mentioned above, my goal is to become a reporter for a professional sports team. If you couldn’t guess from my paragraph above, I want to cover a Major League Baseball team. I grew up reading the Cardinals section in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and my dream would be to go back to St. Louis and be the beat reporter covering my favorite baseball team.
My Job: I am currently a student assistant with Drake Athletic Communications where I cover Drake men’s tennis and women’s rowing. I have been working with Drake Athletic Communications since January of 2023. As the primary contact for men’s tennis and rowing, I am responsible for writing previews and recaps for the Drake Athletics website.
Writing Stories: My freshman year I got involved with the Times-Delphic, the student-run newspaper at Drake University. I wrote articles covering the Drake basketball team and Major League Baseball. I traveled from Des Moines to St. Louis to watch the Arch Madness tournament and wrote a recap of Drake’s performance. They won the tournament and advanced to March Madness for the sixth time in school history.
My Fraternity: At Drake University I am also a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. In Theta Chi I have been the philanthropy chair and sacred purpose chair for my chapter. My responsibilities included planning the chapter’s philanthropy and giving presentations to my chapter about mental health. I have gained leadership and public speaking skills throughout my time serving in those positions. Planning my chapter’s philanthropy has also given me a deeper perspective on event planning and the importance of communication skills.
Bulldog Club Baseball: I founded Bulldog Club Baseball at Drake in the second semester of my freshman year. Seeing an absence of club baseball at Drake, I decided to create and become the club president at Drake University. The marketing for the club has also aided in my pursuit of acquiring leadership skills. To increase membership, I tabled for the club and talked to people I had never met to tell them about the club. I was a captain of my high school’s baseball team, which prepared me for the jump in leadership within the baseball club.
